Maaike Steenhuis, PhD candidate
Maaike started as a PhD student as of February 2023. Her project is part of the New Science of Mental Disorders research consortium, which is a group of scientists working together with a focus on the network approach of mental disorders. The topic of her PhD project is fear of negative evaluation.
People naturally fear negative evaluations of other people. For some people, this fear of negative evaluation (FNE) is extreme and gives rise to psychological disorders, such as social anxiety and depressed mood. FNE can also be a symptom of eating disorders or body dysmorphic disorder. Following the network approach of mental disorders, Maaike will examine when and how FNE fuels dysfunctional thought patterns, fear, and mood. The aim is to uncover the dynamics of FNE and to learn how dysfunctional thought patterns can be changed. To do this, she will conduct a series of lab and field studies.
